I am applying for U.S. Citizenship after being a legal Immigrant (green card) for over 30 years. I
was arrested for shop lifting in Florida years ago

Additional Details:
Do I put that on my application of Citizenship where it asks me if I was ever arrested? If I do,
will I have a problem becoming a citizen of the U.S.? If I don''t put it will they know? Will it
always be on my record? How can I get it cleared? My arrest was in Florida, but I live in CA
now. Thank you

First you need to have your case reviewed to make sure your incident with shoplifting does not render you removable from the U.S. You do not want to file for citizenship only to find out that it was denied AND you are placed into removal proceedings.

Next your case needs to be reviewed to see if you will have issues with the good moral character requirements of the naturalization process. CIS will look at issues within the past 5 years, and in some cases beyond when reviewing good moral character.

You can find info on the natz process at:

You need to answer any questions on the N-400 completely accurately and honestly. Misrepresenting anything could be seen as fraud. CIS will know about your record as they will do their own check. You need to be completely honest and up front with all of your facts.

Based on that incident, you should consult with an immigration attorney before filing any paperwork.
