The Providence Journal reports that on Tuesday, Senator Marc A. Cote attempted to bring a bill
to the floor that would require all Rhode
Island firms with more than three employees to verify
the immigration status and work eligibility of their new employees through an
electronic, federal E-Verify system. Cote felt so strongly about the issue that he
attempted
to invoke a special parliamentary procedure, which would allow the bill to be
put on the floor without committee deliberations. With many opponents to the broadened use
of
the E-Verify system, the bill was quickly moved back to the committee without a
vote.
